Pregnancy No-No’s

Although your gestational surrogate pregnancy won’t be your first pregnancy, it never hurts to have a refresher course. Of course things like alcohol are completely off limits, but what about home and daily hazards that seem to lurk everywhere? Consult our list below of special aspects to keep in mind throughout your pregnancy.

  • Excessive caffeine intake. While some studies do point to problems such as miscarriage or low birth weight, these are only likely to occur if you exceed 300-milligrams of caffeine per day. One can of soda or one cup of coffee or tea per day is okay, but don’t overdo it.
  • Cat litter. Cat feces can play host to a parasite that causes toxoplasmosis. Symptoms include fever, fatigue, and sore throat with devastating consequences such as miscarriage, preterm labor, or serious health problems in the baby. However, this doesn’t mean you need to find a new home for your cat when you are carrying a baby. Instead, have your spouse take over litter duty and be sure to wash your hands after petting the cat.
  • Specific foods. Uncooked, soft cheeses such as feta and brie, and undercooked meats, fish, and poultry may contain listeria bacteria. Symptoms of listeriosis include fever, chills, diarrhea, and nausea, and can cause miscarriage, preterm labor, or stillbirth. Some seafood, specifically shark and swordfish, may also contain high levels of mercury, PCBs, and other toxins. If these foods are consumed during pregnancy, the baby is put at risk for developmental delays. Additionally, it is recommended to stay away from saccharine and use aspartame instead during the course of your pregnancy.
  • Home hazards. Read all cleaning product labels carefully before you use them. Wear gloves and work in well-ventilated areas. Avoid aerosols, oven cleaners, and solvents.
  • Stress. As much as possible, try to stay relaxed, Stress causes the release of hormones that reduce blood flow to the placenta and triggers contractions. Stress has also been linked to miscarriage, preterm birth, and low birth weight. If you work a high pressure job, try to scale back. Practice relaxation techniques and surround yourself with supportive people.

Although it seems like some sort of hazard is creeping around every corner, maintaining a happy and healthy pregnancy won’t be difficult as long as you keep these few important points in mind.
